South Effingham NJROTC defeats Hawthorne NJROTC
South Effingham NJROTC defeated Hawthorne NJROTC 1062 to 941 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, South Effingham NJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Ronny Pierson who shot a 271. The remaining contributing members were William Blakeney, Jace Mock, and Lucas Payne. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Hawthorne NJROTC dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in seventh place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Hawthorne NJROTC was led by NICK MONCADA who shot a 247. The remaining contributing members were JONATHON VILLAGOMEZ, MEGHAN UITZ, and Javier Moreno. Hawthorne NJROTC is from Hawthorne, CA, and is coached by CDR Don Urquidez.
Next up South Effingham NJROTC will compete against Pebble Hills NJROTC from El Paso, TX. Pebble Hills NJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record. Hawthorne NJROTC will compete against Laurens NJROTC from Laurens, SC. Laurens NJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
