Ramona NJROTC Narrowly Defeats Lubbock NJROTC
Ramona NJROTC edged out Lubbock NJROTC 1032 to 1028 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Ramona NJROTC is in fourth place in their Division with a 2 - 2 record. Ramona NJROTC was led by Marisa Houry who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were Joseph Schultz, Hailey Henshaw, and Nicole Lewis. Ramona NJROTC is from Ramona, CA, and is coached by CPO Bob Richardson.
Lubbock NJROTC dropped to 1 - 3 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Lubbock NJROTC was led by Faus Palting who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Jacob Bocanegra, Marc Gomez, and Nathaniel Bibbs. Lubbock NJROTC is from Lubbock, TX, and is coached by CMDCM Mark Hayes.
Next up Ramona NJROTC will compete against Pebble Hills NJROTC from El Paso, TX. Pebble Hills NJROTC currently has a 0 - 4 record. Lubbock NJROTC will compete against Hawthorne NJROTC from Hawthorne, CA. Hawthorne NJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
