Lubbock NJROTC defeats Laurens NJROTC
Lubbock NJROTC defeated Laurens NJROTC 1039 to 1002 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Lubbock NJROTC is in fifth place in their Division with a 1 - 2 record. Lubbock NJROTC was led by Faus Palting who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Adriana Chacon, Marc Gomez, and Zachary Bartlett. Lubbock NJROTC is from Lubbock, TX, and is coached by CMDCM Mark Hayes.
Laurens NJROTC dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Laurens NJROTC was led by Elizabeth Medlin who shot a 260. The remaining contributing members were Ben Carter, Lukas Holtzclaw, and James Medlin. Laurens NJROTC is from Laurens, SC, and is coached by Anthony Linardi.
Next up Lubbock NJROTC will compete against Ramona NJROTC from Ramona, CA. Ramona NJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record. Laurens NJROTC will compete against Hawthorne NJROTC from Hawthorne, CA. Hawthorne NJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
