Cross Creek NJROTC defeats Laurens NJROTC
Cross Creek NJROTC defeated Laurens NJROTC 1057 to 992 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Cross Creek NJROTC is in third place in their Division with a 3 - 2 record. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by Melvin Pell who shot a 269. The remaining contributing members were Nicki Rowe, Ilea Smalley, and Nina Rhodes. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.
Laurens NJROTC dropped to 2 - 3 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Laurens NJROTC was led by Lukas Holtzclaw who shot a 258. The remaining contributing members were Elizabeth Medlin, Ben Carter, and James Medlin. Laurens NJROTC is from Laurens, SC, and is coached by Anthony Linardi.
Next up Cross Creek NJROTC will compete against South Effingham NJROTC from Guyton, GA. South Effingham NJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record. Laurens NJROTC will compete against Zion Benton NJROTC from Zion, IL. Zion Benton NJROTC currently has a 5 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
