North Brunswick AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Stewarts Creek AJROTC
North Brunswick AJROTC edged out Stewarts Creek AJROTC 1025 to 1021 last week in the National Air Rifle League. North Brunswick AJROTC finishes the season in third place in their Division with a 5 - 2 record. North Brunswick AJROTC was led by Justin Asbury who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were Kevin Willetts, Katherine Kelly, and Ashley Buenrostro. North Brunswick AJROTC is from Leland, NC, and is coached by Timothy Washington.
Stewarts Creek AJROTC dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in fourth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Stewarts Creek AJROTC was led by Marissa England who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Destiny Short, Christina Johnson, and Kyle Garrett. Stewarts Creek AJROTC is from Smyrna, TN, and is coached by LTC Joel Payne.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
