South Effingham NJROTC Upsets Cross Creek NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season South Effingham NJROTC upset Cross Creek NJROTC 1079 to 1078 last week in the National Air Rifle League. South Effingham NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 29 points lower than Cross Creek NJROTC coming into this game.
South Effingham NJROTC finishes the season in fourth place in their Division with a 4 - 3 record. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Jayce Mock who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were William Blakeney, Joseph Keeton, and Lucas Payne. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Cross Creek NJROTC dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in third place in their Division. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by Nicki Rowe who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Marvin Pell, Melvin Pell, and JinYee Ortiz. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.
Cross Creek will go on to represent Navy JROTC in the post-season Championship Tournament. They are the number six seed and will compete against three seed, and defending Sporter League Champion, Gulfport MCJROTC in the opening round game.
South Effingham also advances to the post-season, to the Invitational Tournament. They are the number five seed and will compete against four seed Pueblo NJROTC in the opening round game. The post-season will begin the week after Thanksgiving.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
