Cross Creek NJROTC Wins the National Air Rifle League Invitational Tournament

Cross Creek NJROTC defeated North Brunswick AJROTC and wins the National Air Rifle League Invitational Tournament. The final score was 2131 to 2028.

Cross Creek entered the Invitational Tournament as the number one seed. In the first round they out shot Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC. In the semifinals they out shot the number four seed South Effingham NJROTC. North Brunswick was the number two seed. They made it to the title game after wins against Tombstone AJROTC and Denver North AJROTC.

In the title game Cross Creek NJROTC was led by, Melvin Scott Pell who shot a 547. The remaining contributing members were Marvin Alexander Pell, Patrick Johnson, JinYee Ortiz, and Kirsten Sullivan. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.

Cross Creek finishes the season with an 8 - 2 record. They finished second in the Navy JROTC Conference during the regular season.

North Brunswick run on the Invitational Title was impressive in and by itself. Their successful season is even more impressive considering they had to sit out the first three weeks of the regular season due to after effects of Hurricane Florence. Their only losses during the regular season were to eventual league champion Nation Ford MCJROTC

North Brunswick AJROTC finished the season with a 5 - 3 record. In the title game they were led by, Justin Asbury who shot a 533. The remaining contributing members were Katherine Kelly, Maria Garcia, Ashley Buenrostro, and Karina Betancourt. North Brunswick AJROTC is from Leland, NC, and is coached by George L. Williams.

The National Air Rifle League is sponsored by the Orion Scoring System and is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts, an eight week regular season, followed by the postseason. The Championship Tournament takes the top eight teams after the regular season, and the Invitational Tournament takes the next eight best teams. Both tournaments are a single-elimination style bracket.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 20 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
