West Broward AJROTC defeats St Stephens NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season West Broward AJROTC defeated St Stephens NJROTC 1065 to 938 last week in the National Air Rifle League. West Broward AJROTC finishes the season in first place overall and first place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 7 - 0 record. West Broward AJROTC was led by, Andrea Aylwin who shot a 269. The remaining contributing members were Justin Barnes, Audrey White, and Edward Gispert. West Broward AJROTC is from Pembroke Pines, FL, and is coached by Kenneth Merkel.
St Stephens NJROTC finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. They finishes the season in eleventh place overall and third place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. St Stephens NJROTC was led by, Ian McLaughlin who shot a 242. The remaining contributing members were Jessica Powers, Molly Hitaffer, and Ashley Laney. St Stephens NJROTC is from Hickory, NC, and is coached by John Moore.
West Broward AJROTC will advance to the Army JROTC Conference Title Game. They will take on Clarkrange AJROTC for that title. This game is scheduled for December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
