Hazel Green NJROTC Upsets West Carteret NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Hazel Green NJROTC upset West Carteret NJROTC 1006 to 974 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Hazel Green NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 14 points lower than West Carteret NJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, Hazel Green NJROTC is in eighth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 4 - 2 record. Hazel Green NJROTC was led by, Jacob Harris who shot a 260. The remaining contributing members were Cameron Hayes, Corbynn Conway, and Garrett Benson. Hazel Green NJROTC is from Hazel Green, AL, and is coached by Larry Schultz.
West Carteret NJROTC currently has a 2 - 4 record. After the loss they are in ninth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season West Carteret NJROTC was led by, Travis Barbour who shot a 262. The remaining contributing members were Alex Maziak, Angelina Neufeld, and Alex Clark. West Carteret NJROTC is from Moorehead City, NC, and is coached by Col Giani.
Next up Hazel Green NJROTC will compete against Eldorado MCJROTC from Albuquerque, NM. Eldorado MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 5 record. While West Carteret NJROTC will compete against Hickman County AJROTC from Centerville, TN. Hickman County AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
