Grove City NJROTC Upsets West Carteret NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Grove City NJROTC upset West Carteret NJROTC 973 to 955 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Grove City NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 75 points lower than West Carteret NJROTC coming into this game.
They currently have a 3 - 1 record. Grove City NJROTC was led by, Anthony Tussing who shot a 248. The remaining contributing members were Ashton Writsel, Chase Gunning, and Kylie Marvin. Grove City NJROTC is from Grove City, OH, and is coached by CDR Dustin Martin.
West Carteret NJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record. After the loss they are in ninth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season West Carteret NJROTC was led by, Travis Barbour who shot a 252. The remaining contributing members were Nativia Snavley, Hayden Winchell, and Angelina Neufeld. West Carteret NJROTC is from Moorehead City, NC, and is coached by Col Giani.
Next up Grove City NJROTC will compete against West AJROTC from Denver, CO. West AJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record. While West Carteret NJROTC will compete against Northwood AJROTC from Shreveport, LA. Northwood AJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
