Grossmont NJROTC defeats Onate NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Grossmont NJROTC defeated Onate NJROTC 1014 to 968 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Grossmont NJROTC is in eleventh place overall and third place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 3 - 0 record. Grossmont NJROTC was led by Paulina Mendoza who shot a 258. The remaining contributing members were Calista Zaenger, Summer Oraha, and Jocelyn Brown-Hill. Grossmont NJROTC is from El Cajon, CA, and is coached by Mark Brosnan.
Onate NJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record. After the loss they are in tenth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Onate NJROTC was led by Rocio Valadez who shot a 255. The remaining contributing members were Levi (Required), Crystal Parra, and Sky Cao. Onate NJROTC is from Las Cruces, NM, and is coached by Robert Rodriguez.
Next up Grossmont NJROTC will compete against United South MCJROTC from Laredo, TX. United South MCJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record. While Onate NJROTC will compete against Pueblo West AJROTC from Pueblo West, CO. Pueblo West AJROTC currently has a 2 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
