Gulfport MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Cross Creek NJROTC

Third seed Gulfport MCJROTC edged out sixth Cross Creek NJROTC 1080 to 1070 last week in the National Air Rifle League Championship Tournament's quarter final round. Gulfport MCJROTC improved their overall record to 8 - 0. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Taylor Saulters who shot a 272. The remaining contributing members were Mackayla Bourgeois, Dimitri Celentano, and Taylor Gautier. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.

Cross Creek NJROTC finished the season with a 4 - 4 record, including a third place finish in the Navy JROTC Champions Division. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by Patrick Johnson who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Marvin Pell, Nicki Rowe, Melvin Pell, and Clayton Watson. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.

Gulfport MCJROTC will advance this week to the semi-finals to take on Lebanon AJROTC from Lebanon, OR. This game pits the 2017 Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division winner against the 2017 Army JROTC Champions Division winner. This will be the second meeting between these two teams. They first meet last year in the semi-final round, Gulfport MCJROTC won that game by 13 points.

The post-season Championship Tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
