Henderson County AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Smithson Valley NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Henderson County AJROTC edged out Smithson Valley NJROTC 982.0 to 963.6 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Henderson County AJROTC finishes the season in tenth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. Henderson County AJROTC was led by, Catherine Cantrell who shot a 267.7. The remaining contributing members were Robert Bentonwhite, Silas Beard, and Seth Lewis. Henderson County AJROTC is from Henderson, KY, and is coached by SFC Ashley Wolfe.
Smithson Valley NJROTC finished the season with a 4 - 3 record. They finishes the season in tenth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Smithson Valley NJROTC was led by, Cruz Overson who shot a 246.3. The remaining contributing members were Mathieu Juarez, Sebastian Ibarra, and Conner Howard. Smithson Valley NJROTC is from Spring Branch, TX, and is coached by Scott Outlaw.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
