East River AJROTC Upsets Waimea AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season East River AJROTC upset Waimea AJROTC 1044 to 1034 last week in the National Air Rifle League. East River AJROTC was able to win despite averaging 17 points lower than Waimea AJROTC coming into this game.
Their second win in a row. East River AJROTC finishes the regular season in seventeenth place overall and eighth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 4 - 3 record. East River AJROTC was led by, Adam Wajda who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Trinitee Jeffers, Hunter Nguyen, and Erica Pries. East River AJROTC is from Orlando, FL, and is coached by Gerrick Smith.
Snapping a two game win streak Waimea AJROTC finished the regular season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the season in sixteenth place overall and seventh place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Waimea AJROTC was led by, Bergen Ceballos who shot a 262. The remaining contributing members were Shannon Caoagdan, Norie Mae Ramirez, and Kylan Takakusagi. Waimea AJROTC is from Waimea, HI, and is coached by Darin Larsen.
Both teams will advance to the postseason Invitational Tournament. East River is the number eight seed and will compete against Fontana MCJROTC in the first round. Waimea AJROTC is the number seven seed and will go against Pueblo County AJROTC in the first round. The post season begins December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
