Tempe Union AJROTC Narrowly Defeats New Braunfels MCJROTC

Tempe Union AJROTC edged out New Braunfels MCJROTC 1011 to 1000 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row. Tempe Union AJROTC finishes the season in sixth place overall and fourth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 0 record. Tempe Union AJROTC was led by, Sam Lumbra who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Blair Chance, Joseph Sweeney, and Jacob Manoguerra. Tempe Union AJROTC is from Tempe, AZ, and is coached by MAJ Robert Fore.

New Braunfels MCJROTC finished the season with a 3 - 3 record. They finishes the season in twenty-second place overall and fourth place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season New Braunfels MCJROTC was led by, Kaitlyn Funkhouser who shot a 255. The remaining contributing members were Micheala Chetwood, Ryan Parker, and Charles Schreiber. New Braunfels MCJROTC is from New Braunfels, TX, and is coached by Mark House.

These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
