Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club Narrowly Defeats Pickaway Diabolos
Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club edged out Pickaway Diabolos 1518 to 1501 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club is in fifth place overall and fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They currently have a 3 - 2 record. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club was led by, Kayley Pasko who shot a 394. The remaining contributing members were Abbigail Renger, Taylor Niemiec, and Haley Reynolds. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club is from Stratford, CT, and is coached by CPT Alan Wilcoxson and Josie Burzynski.
Pickaway Diabolos currently has a 2 - 3 record. After the loss they are in eighth place overall and sixth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Pickaway Diabolos was led by, Max Martinez who shot a 394. The remaining contributing members were Riley Minor, Emma Whitmore, and Tyler Goodwin. Pickaway Diabolos is from Circleville, OH, and is coached by Patrick Cherry.
Next up Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club will compete against Granbury MCJROTC from Granbury, TX. Granbury MCJROTC currently has a 5 - 0 record. While Pickaway Diabolos will compete against Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC from Fountain, CO. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
