Selma MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Pueblo County AJROTC
Selma MCJROTC edged out Pueblo County AJROTC 1091 to 1086 last week in the National Air Rifle League Sporter Invitational Tournament. Selma MCJROTC improved their overall season record to 6 - 3. Selma MCJROTC was led by Gabriela Sanchez Rios who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Samantha Louie, Mia Castro, Estefanie Lopez, and Nicholas Mullins. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.
Selma MCJROTC will advance to the Sporter Invitational Tournament championship game this week to take on Christian County AFJROTC from Hopkinsville, KY. This is the first meeting between these two teams.
Pueblo County AJROTC finishes the season with a 7 - 2 record, including a second place finish in the Army Champions Division during the regular season. Pueblo County AJROTC was led by Jennifer Knox who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Nathaniel Romero, Hannah Brown, Kayla Mihelich, and Larissa Swope. Pueblo County AJROTC is from Pueblo, CO, and is coached by Arnold Lewis.
The post-season Invitational Tournament is reserved for some of the top teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by two single-elimination tournaments, going on now, for the top teams.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
