Lebanon AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Gulfport MCJROTC
By a slim four point margin Lebanon AJROTC edged out Gulfport MCJROTC 1086 to 1082 last week in the National Air Rifle League Sporter Championship Tournament. Lebanon will advance to the title game this week.
Lebanon AJROTC's win marked the first time in three seasons that any team out performed Gulfport MCJROTC. In these three seasons Gulfport amassed a 30 - 1 record, two league championships, three Marine Corps Champions Division titles, and they hold the league single game record at 1121.
Lebanon AJROTC was led by Destry Brooks who shot a 279. The remaining contributing members were Logan Hibbert, Amber Witherell, Jake Slingluff, and Hailey Clevenger. Lebanon AJROTC is from Lebanon, OR, and is coached by Mark Smith.
Lebanon AJROTC will advance to the championship game this week where they will take on Ozark AJROTC from Ozark, MO. Ozark AJROTC has a 7 - 2 record and is seeded fourth in the tournament. These two teams meet in the first week of the league, with Lebanon winning that game 1090 to 1079.
Gulfport MCJROTC finishes the season with a 8 - 1 record, which includes winning the Marine Corps Champions Division regular season title. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Mackayla Bourgeois who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Taylor Saulters, Dimitri Celentano, and Taylor Gautier. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.
The post-season Championship Tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
