Lebanon AJROTC defeats South Panola AFJROTC

Second seeded Lebanon AJROTC defeated seventh seeded South Panola AFJROTC 1085 to 1061 last week in the National Air Rifle League Championship Tournament. Lebanon AJROTC remains undefeated and improved their overall record to 8 - 0. Lebanon AJROTC was led by Jake Slingluff who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Logan Hibbert, Amber Witherell, Hailey Clevenger, and Destry Brooks. Lebanon AJROTC is from Lebanon, OR, and is coached by Mark Smith.

South Panola AFJROTC finishes their season with a 7 - 1 record, which included winning the AFJROTC Champions Division. South Panola AFJROTC was led by Nicholas Rudd who shot a 267. The remaining contributing members were Nikki Still, Jaylen Hall, Kayla Walker, and Jason Robertson. South Panola AFJROTC is from Batesville, MS, and is coached by Col Robert Mims.

Lebanon AJROTC will advance this week to the semi-finals to take on Gulfport MCJROTC from Gulfport, MS. This game pits the 2017 Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division winner against the 2017 Army JROTC Champions Division winner. This will be the second meeting between these two teams. They first meet last year in the semi-final round, Gulfport MCJROTC won that game by 13 points.

The post-season Championship Tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
