Annapolis NJROTC Upsets Grossmont NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Annapolis NJROTC upset Grossmont NJROTC 1009 to 953 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Annapolis NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 38 points lower than Grossmont NJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, Annapolis NJROTC is in sixth place in their Division with a 2 - 4 record. Annapolis NJROTC was led by Caden Brian who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Daniel Leatherman, Justin Sherman, and Kari Meekins. Annapolis NJROTC is from Annapolis, MD, and is coached by Andrea Miller.
Grossmont NJROTC dropped to 4 - 2 on the season. They are currently in third place in their Division. Grossmont NJROTC was led by Paulina Mendoza who shot a 255. The remaining contributing members were Summer Oraha, Kayla Mendoza, and Jocelyn Brown-Hill. Grossmont NJROTC is from El Cajon, CA, and is coached by Mark Brosnan.
Next up Annapolis NJROTC will compete against Los Alamos NJROTC from Los Alamos, Uni. Los Alamos NJROTC currently has a 0 - 5 record. Grossmont NJROTC will compete against Union Pines NJROTC from Cameron, NC. Union Pines NJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
