Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC defeats West AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC defeated West AJROTC 1440 to 1352 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC was led by Alfred Ballejos who shot a 375. The remaining contributing members were Isaiah Otero, Merissa Martinez, and Iliana Trinidad. Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC is from Albuquerque, NM, and is coached by GYSGT Tim Shaner.
Snapping a three game win streak West AJROTC dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in third place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season West AJROTC was led by Daniel Ponce de Leon who shot a 354. The remaining contributing members were Lesly Trejo-Nava, Ashlyn DeLaRosa-Ramirez, and Kimberly Irazoque-Soriano. West AJROTC is from Denver, CO, and is coached by Jeffrey Wilson.
Next up Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC will compete against C. T. Johnson AJROTC from San Antonio, TX. C. T. Johnson AJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record. West AJROTC will compete against Grainger AJROTC from Rutledge, TN. Grainger AJROTC currently has a 0 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
