El Camino Real NJROTC Upsets York Comprehensive NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season El Camino Real NJROTC upset York Comprehensive NJROTC 716 to 587 last week in the National Air Rifle League. El Camino Real NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 41 points lower than York Comprehensive NJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, El Camino Real NJROTC is in sixth place in their Division with a 2 - 1 record. El Camino Real NJROTC was led by Ashley Soo Hoo who shot a 218. The remaining contributing members were Nadia Sabar, Mercy Phuthama, and Gwen Goldenberg. El Camino Real NJROTC is from Woodland Hills, CA, and is coached by Michael Consoletti.
York Comprehensive NJROTC dropped to 0 - 3 on the season. They are currently in tenth place in their Division. York Comprehensive NJROTC was led by Ladreque Cherry who shot a 211. The remaining contributing members were Jason Garza, Caleb Tanner, and Cruz Jose. York Comprehensive NJROTC is from York, SC, and is coached by SCPO Scott Moss.
Next up El Camino Real NJROTC will compete against St Stephens NJROTC from Hickory, NC. St Stephens NJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record. York Comprehensive NJROTC will compete against Eugene Ashley NJROTC from Wilmington, NC. Eugene Ashley NJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
