Georgia Competitive Shooters defeats Carrollton High School
Shooting their highest score of the season Georgia Competitive Shooters defeated Carrollton High School 1553 to 1474 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row, Georgia Competitive Shooters is in second place in their Division with a 2 - 0 record. Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by Molly McGhin who shot a 397. The remaining contributing members were Veronica Stanley, Addy Burrow, and Sawyer Williams. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.
Carrollton High School dropped to 0 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fifth place in their Division. Carrollton High School was led by Thomas Harris who shot a 377. The remaining contributing members were Morgan Frank, Taylor Berry, and Ben Bradley. Carrollton High School is from Carrollton, GA, and is coached by Mike Lewis.
Next up Georgia Competitive Shooters will compete against Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club from Stratford, CT. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club currently has a 1 - 0 record. Carrollton High School will compete against Lake Region Shooting Sports from Devils Lake, ND. Lake Region Shooting Sports currently has a 2 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
