Georgia Competitive Shooters Repeats as Orion National Air Rifle League's Precision Champion

Georgia Competitive Shooters edges out Maspenock Rod and Gun Club 1549 to 1535 to win their second straight National Air Rifle League's Precision Championship.

The National Air Rifle League is only two years old but has been dominated from start by Georgia Competitive Shooters. They won both their Divisional championship in 2016 and 2015, and both season's championship tournaments. In two years they remain the only undefeated precision team, amassing an impressive 22 - 0 record.

In the championship game Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by Molly McGhin and MVP Addy Burrow who each shot an impressive 390. Sam Payne added a 385, Hannah Rutledge a 384, and Leah Martin shot a 382. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.

Despite finishing second Maspenock had a lot of hard earned success this season. In the regular season they competed in the Junior Rifle Club Champion's Division where they finished third with a 4 - 3 record. Despite dropping early games against Lake Region Shooting Sports and Bridge Port Rifle Club, by the end of the season they were consistently shooting scores 1510 or better.

In the post season they continued to improve. In their quarter final game they shot a 1512 to defeat Queen Anne Marksmanship. In the semi-final game they shot a 1528 to defeat Bridgeport Rifle Club. Their 1535 in the championship game was their best score all season.

In the championship game Maspenock Rod and Gun Club was led by Aliya Butt who shot a 388. Brendan Seitz added a 386, Zuzu Demetrius a 383, Kristine Peters a 378, and Austin Lee shot a 350. Maspenock Rod and Gun Club is from Milford, MA, and is coached by Manuel Snyderman.

This year's Most Valuable Player award goes to Georgia Competitive Shooter's Addy Burrow. In two of the three post-season games Burrow shot 390 or better. In the quarter final game against Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC Burrow lead the team with a 388. Against Los Alamos in the semi-finals Burrow shot a 391. Finally in the championship game Burrow lead the team again (tied with McGin) with a 390.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Precision League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by the single-elimination tournament for the top eight teams who competed for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
