Zion Benton NJROTC Advances to Title Game After Defeating Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC

Top seed Zion Benton NJROTC edged out fifth seed Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC 1104 to 1087 last week in the National Air Rifle League semi-final game. This was the fourth time this season that Zion Benton NJROTC broke the 1100 mark.

Zion Benton NJROTC was led by HAILEY SMITH who shot an impressive 284. The remaining contributing members were JAYCIE HOENIG, ELENA APARICIO, REGINA RAQUINO, and COLE RICE. Zion Benton NJROTC is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.

Zion Benton NJROTC advances to the title game this week where they will take on second seed and defending league champion Gulfport MCJROTC.

Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC finishes their first season in the league with an impressive 7 - 2 aggregate record. In the regular season they competed in what was perhaps the most difficult division, the Army JROTC Champions Division. Their they finished second with a 6 - 1 record.

In the semi-final game Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC was led by Aireonna GONZALES who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Alexander Ball , Brianna MITTA, Aquamarine Alvarez, and Alani Thompson. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC is from Fountain, CO, and is coached by Rodney Smith.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
