Zion Benton NJROTC defeats Humboldt Sharpshooters
Top seed Zion Benton NJROTC defeated eighth seed Humboldt Sharpshooters 1089 to 1017 last week in the National Air Rifle League Sporter Tournament.
Zion Benton NJROTC has been dominate all season. They won their regular season division, the Navy JROTC Champions Division, with a perfect 7 - 0 record. This was the second year in a row they won their division. Three times this season they posted scores above the 1100 mark.
In their quarter final game Zion Benton NJROTC was led by HAILEY SMITH who shot a 279. The remaining contributing members were MATTHEW CRESS, REGINA RAQUINO, COLE RICE, and JAYCIE HOENIG. Zion Benton NJROTC is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.
Zion Benton NJROTC will take on fifth seed Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC in the semi-finals.
Their second year in the league, this was Humboldt Sharpshooters first year in the post-season tournament. During the regular season they won the Junior Rifle Club Champion's Division with a perfect 7 - 0 record.
In their quarter final game Humboldt Sharpshooters was led by Callie Ivey who shot a 259. The remaining contributing members were Annastasia Galpin, Eli Dissing, Henry Volk, and Braiden Luedtke. Humboldt Sharpshooters is from Hartford, SD, and is coached by Eric Dissing.
The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
