Liberty NJROTC Upsets Leavenworth AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Liberty NJROTC upset Leavenworth AJROTC 1372 to 1347 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Liberty NJROTC was able to win despite averaging 20 points lower than Leavenworth AJROTC coming into this game.
Their second win in a row, Liberty NJROTC is in third place in their Division with a 5 - 1 record. Liberty NJROTC was led by Margarita Melnilkova who shot a 360. The remaining contributing members were Jenafer Johanson, Chandler Alexander, and Christian Castro. Liberty NJROTC is from Renton, WA, and is coached by John Deehr and Art Weatherford.
Snapping a five game win streak Leavenworth AJROTC dropped to 5 - 1 on the season. They are currently in second place in their Division. Leavenworth AJROTC was led by Mitchell Moorehead who shot a 346. The remaining contributing members were Morgan Savage, Enrique Baker, and Dylan Knowles. Leavenworth AJROTC is from Leavenworth, KS, and is coached by MSG Timothy Danuser.
Next up Liberty NJROTC will compete against Glynn Academy MCJROTC from Brunswick, GA. Glynn Academy MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 6 record. Leavenworth AJROTC will compete against Selma MCJROTC from Selma, CA. Selma MCJROTC currently has a 6 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
