Selma MCJROTC defeats Liberty NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Selma MCJROTC defeated Liberty NJROTC 1441 to 1366 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Selma MCJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Selma MCJROTC was led by Danielle Louie who shot a 377. The remaining contributing members were Samantha Louie, Kristopher Klien, and Mia Castro. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.
Snapping a three game win streak Liberty NJROTC dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in third place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Liberty NJROTC was led by Margarita Melnilkova who shot a 356. The remaining contributing members were Christian Castro, Chandler Alexander, and Jenafer Johanson. Liberty NJROTC is from Renton, WA, and is coached by John Deehr and Art Weatherford.
Next up Selma MCJROTC will compete against Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC from Fort Pierce, FL. Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record. Liberty NJROTC will compete against William Floyd NJROTC from Mastic Beach, NY. William Floyd NJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
