St. John's College AJROTC defeats Douglas County AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season St. John's College AJROTC defeated Douglas County AJROTC 1274 to 1097 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row, St. John's College AJROTC is in fourth place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. St. John's College AJROTC was led by Connor Lamble who shot a 332. The remaining contributing members were Jacob Petersen, Maria Shepp, and John Kavanagh. St. John's College AJROTC is from Washington, DC, and is coached by SFC Scheddrick Womack.
Snapping a three game win streak Douglas County AJROTC dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in fifth place in their Division. Douglas County AJROTC was led by Larissa Lyons who shot a 314. The remaining contributing members were Brennan Battle, Rhealan Baumgartner, and Ben Willoughby. Douglas County AJROTC is from Douglasville, GA, and is coached by LTC Andrew Lark.
Next up St. John's College AJROTC will compete against Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC from Fort Pierce, FL. Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record. Douglas County AJROTC will compete against Selma MCJROTC from Selma, CA. Selma MCJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
