Liberty NJROTC defeats Ridge View AJROTC
Liberty NJROTC defeated Ridge View AJROTC 1256 to 767 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Liberty NJROTC is in third place in their Division with a 1 - 0 record. Liberty NJROTC was led by Margarita Melnilkova who shot a 349. The remaining contributing members were Chandler Alexander, Jenafer Johanson, and Timothy Caole. Liberty NJROTC is from Renton, WA, and is coached by John Deehr and Art Weatherford.
Ridge View AJROTC dropped to 0 - 2 on the season. They are currently in ninth place in their Division. Ridge View AJROTC was led by Jacob Newman who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Jared Banks, Jillian LeRoux, and Christopher Tinneny. Ridge View AJROTC is from Columbia, SC, and is coached by Gene England.
Next up Liberty NJROTC will compete against Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC from Fort Pierce, FL. Fort Pierce Westwood AJROTC currently has a 1 - 0 record. Ridge View AJROTC will compete against Selma MCJROTC from Selma, CA. Selma MCJROTC currently has a 2 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
