Versailles American Legion defeats Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club
Versailles American Legion defeated Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club 823 to 655 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Versailles American Legion is in sixth place in their Division with a 2 - 4 record. Versailles American Legion was led by Jamie Thomas who shot a 224. The remaining contributing members were Nathan May, Kaitlyn Schwanholt, and Richard Block. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.
Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club dropped to 2 - 3 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club was led by Josue Valverde who shot a 204. The remaining contributing members were Long Nguyen, Cristobal Huerta, and Vikram Nandi. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club is from San Jose, CA, and is coached by Michael Davis.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
