Humboldt Sharpshooters Narrowly Defeats Carroll County 4-H
Humboldt Sharpshooters edged out Carroll County 4-H 990 to 979 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row, Humboldt Sharpshooters is in third place in their Division with a 2 - 0 record. Humboldt Sharpshooters was led by Annastasia Galpin who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Callie Ivey, Cian McMillin, and Eli Dissing. Humboldt Sharpshooters is from Hartford, SD, and is coached by Rechelle Dissing.
Carroll County 4-H dropped to 0 - 2 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Carroll County 4-H was led by Maddi Boggs who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Collin Grubbs, Morgan Frank, and Holly Bearden. Carroll County 4-H is from Carrollton, GA, and is coached by Joel Grubbs.
Next up Humboldt Sharpshooters will compete against Saint Thomas Academy from Mendota Heights, MN. Saint Thomas Academy currently has a 2 - 0 record. Carroll County 4-H will compete against Kealakehe Rifle Team from Kailua-Kona, HI. Kealakehe Rifle Team currently has a 1 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
