Auburn AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Dinwiddie AJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Auburn AJROTC edged out Dinwiddie AJROTC 908 to 894 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Auburn AJROTC is in fourth place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. Auburn AJROTC was led by Marcos Mauries who shot a 261. The remaining contributing members were Lael Verace, Donni Purifoy , and Ian Salinas. Auburn AJROTC is from Rockford, IL, and is coached by Chris McMullen.

Dinwiddie AJROTC dropped to 1 - 3 on the season. They are currently in seventh place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Dinwiddie AJROTC was led by EBONY ROSS who shot a 230. The remaining contributing members were CONNER DAVIES , JOHNATHAN TRAMMELL, and ALEX FREEMAN. Dinwiddie AJROTC is from Dinwiddie, VA, and is coached by Darrold Harper.

Next up Auburn AJROTC will compete against Leavenworth AJROTC from Leavenworth, KS. Leavenworth AJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record. Dinwiddie AJROTC will compete against Grainger AJROTC from Rutledge, TN. Grainger AJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record.

These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Governors Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
