Auburn AJROTC defeats Alvin C. York Institute
Auburn AJROTC defeated Alvin C. York Institute 971 to 787 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Auburn AJROTC finishes the season in third place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. Auburn AJROTC was led by Marcos Mauries who shot a 259. The remaining contributing members were Donni Purifoy , Lael Verace, and Ian Salinas. Auburn AJROTC is from Rockford, IL, and is coached by Chris McMullen.
Alvin C. York Institute dropped to 0 - 7 on the season. They finish the season in tenth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Alvin C. York Institute was led by Zachary Holdren who shot a 236. The remaining contributing members were Andrew Reagan, Alekxandra Dunkle, and James Atkins. Alvin C. York Institute is from Jamestown, TN, and is coached by 1SG Mark Lillie.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Governors Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
