Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC defeats Cookeville AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC defeated Cookeville AJROTC 1088 to 967 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC finishes the regular season in second place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC was led by Aquamarine Alvarez who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Alexander Ball , Aireonna GONZALES, and Brianna MITTA. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC is from Fountain, CO, and is coached by Rodney Smith.
Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC's season will continue next week in the Post-Season tournament. They received an at large bid and will be seeded fifth. They will compete against fourth seed Abraham Lincoln AJROTC in the opening game.
By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.
Cookeville AJROTC dropped to 1 - 6 on the season. They finish the season in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Cookeville AJROTC was led by Andrew Loftis who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Lainee Darrow, Donald Tulodieski, and Montanah Schopieray. Cookeville AJROTC is from Cookeville, TN, and is coached by 1SG Doug Romero.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
