Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports defeats Red River Rangers
Shooting their highest score of the season Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports defeated Red River Rangers 2190.2 to 2119.6 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Rachel Haines who shot a 582.5. The remaining contributing members were Angelynn Sanchez, Wesley Myers, and Mikaela Sanchez. They are from Houston, TX, and are coached by Laura Haines.
Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports is competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in fourth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in second place. They have a 2 - 2 record.
Shooting their highest team score of the season Red River Rangers was led by Victoria McClung who shot a 610.9. The remaining contributing members were Grayson Muller, Addison Burnley, and Elizabeth Walker. Red River Rangers is from Shreveport, LA, and is coached by Christopher Simon/ Clayton Brakeville.
Red River Rangers is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in sixth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in third place. They have a 0 - 4 record.
Next up Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports will compete against Vilseck AJROTC from Vilseck, Germany. Vilseck AJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record. While Red River Rangers will compete against Mayfield AFJROTC from Las Cruces, NM. Mayfield AFJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
