American Legion Post 290 Narrowly Defeats X Shots Shooting Club
Shooting their highest score of the season American Legion Post 290 edged out X Shots Shooting Club 1067.0 to 1065.9 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row. American Legion Post 290 was led by Elizabeth Gunn who shot a 272.4. The remaining contributing members were Faith Clevenger, Sierra Lemison, and Marisa McDonough. They are from Stafford, VA, and are coached by Mike Flanagan.
American Legion Post 290 is competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in third place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in first place. They have a 4 - 0 record.
X Shots Shooting Club was led by Logan Chong who shot a 268.7. The remaining contributing members were Trinity Vong, Robert Nordin, and Sophia Ching. X Shots Shooting Club is from Aiea, HI, and is coached by Yuji Hata.
X Shots Shooting Club is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in seventh place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in second place. They have a 2 - 2 record.
Next up American Legion Post 290 will compete against Kofa MCJROTC from Yuma, AZ. Kofa MCJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record. While X Shots Shooting Club will compete against Ramona NJROTC from Ramona, CA. Ramona NJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
