Smithson Valley NJROTC defeats Pickaway Diabolos
Shooting their highest score of the season Smithson Valley NJROTC defeated Pickaway Diabolos 935.7 to 832.3 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row. They currently have a 4 - 0 record. Smithson Valley NJROTC was led by, Josh Velasquez who shot a 238.0. The remaining contributing members were Angelica Silva, Conner Howard, and Sebastian Ibarra. Smithson Valley NJROTC is from Spring Branch, TX, and is coached by Scott Outlaw.
Pickaway Diabolos currently has a 2 - 3 record. After the loss they are in eighth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Pickaway Diabolos was led by, Avery Hines who shot a 252.8. The remaining contributing members were Anna McComb, Ethan Rohrbacher, and Elijah Marcum. Pickaway Diabolos is from Circleville, OH, and is coached by Patrick D. Cherry.
Next up Smithson Valley NJROTC will compete against Eldorado NJROTC from Las Vegas, NV. Eldorado NJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record. While Pickaway Diabolos has a bye week.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
