Orion's National Air Rifle "New Shooter" League

Orion's National Air Rifle League

Orion's National Air Rifle "New Shooter" League (The League) is an offshoot of the National Air Rifle League intended for young athletes in their first year of competition. It seeks to create a bold new competition format, allowing teams from throughout the country to compete virtually in an exciting, spectator friendly league. Teams of "New Shooters," athletes in their first year of competition, will compete against each other in a 8 game 10 week season. The League seeks to reward participation and improvement over competition. As a result all athletes will receive participation pins, and medals will be awarded to approximately 50% of the participating teams and athletes.

Description

"New Shooter" League Description

Each team competes in an eight game, ten week, season. Each game is between two teams in the league of relatively equal skill level. The winner of each game is the team with the highest score. All eligible school or club members may participate in each game. A team score is the sum of the top four athlete scores from each game. Each team will shoot a 40 shot course of fire in each game.

Teams are ranked according to their win-loss record. Team with equal win-loss record are ranked by their seasonal avearge.

The league schedule is built dynamically, each week. Teams will be scheduled to compete against other teams of equal, or near equal, win-loss record. In this way the top performing teams will compete against each other while the lower performing teams compete against each other.

Teams compete each week from their home range. Scores from each team will be merged on the Internet using Orion's Virtual Match technology. Results will be listed live online on Orion's Result Center.

  • The New Shooter league has a separate schedule and registration. The New Shooter league will run from late January to March 2018.
  • The New Shooter league is only open to athletes competing in their first year. Whereas the main National Air Rifle League is open to all high school age athlete regardless of competition experience.
  • Teams are not split into conferences or skill based divisions. Instead, all teams compete in the same (single division) league. With the exception of the first two weeks where games are scheduled randomly, competition parity is achieved by scheduling games between teams of equal or near equal number of wins.
  • The New Shooter league is for Sporter athletes only.
  • The New Shooter league just has a regular season, there is not a post-season tournament.
  • Awards emphasis participation and improvement over competition.

For more information on the "New Shooter" league download the complete National Air Rifle "New Shooter" League Program.

League Schedule

Games will be scheduled dynamically, one week in advance. Each Monday by noon, the schedule for the following week will be released.

The first two weeks of the league (the first two games) games will be scheduled randomly, prior to the start of the league.

After the first week (the first game is completed), the League Administrator will schedule games for the third week. Games will be scheduled such that teams who won their first week's games will compete against each other, and teams that did not win their first week’s game will compete against each other.

After the second week (the first two games are completed), the League Administrator will schedule games for the fourth week. Games will be scheduled such that teams with two wins will compete against each other, teams with one win will compete against each other, and teams with no wins will compete against each other in the fourth week.

This pattern of scheduling games with teams of equal number of wins will continue throughout the league. The League Administrator will attempt to schedule games between teams of equal number of wins throughout the league.

The season is 10 weeks long with each team shooting in 8 games. Each team will have two bye weeks during the season.

Eligibility

All athletes must be in their first year of competitive marksmanship experience. For the purposes of the League this is defined as any athlete whose first air rifle or smallbore rifle competition was on or after 1 August 2017. Athletes who only competed in BB Gun, Air Pistol, or other shooting disciplines are still eligible to compete.

Team members must be active, participating members of the same club or school team. All athletes must be eligible to compete under the National Three-Position Air Rifle Rules (section 3.1). No all-star teams are allowed. A club or school may only enter one team in the League.

The League is for Sporter class athletes only.

An eligible athlete may compete in both the 2017 National Air Rifle League and the 2018 "New Shooter" League.

Awards

To help encourage the development of young athletes and recognize top performers, The League seeks to provide as many awards as possible to deserving teams and their team members. The League is purposefully choosing to emphasize participation and improvement over winning.

The participation and award schedule for 2018 is as follows:

  • Each athlete from each team will receive a participation pin.
  • Each athlete will receive a specially designed league sticker that may be placed on his or her rifle.
  • A league poster for each participating team.
  • Engraved medals for each athletes in each team that meets two of the three criteria, with specially designed medals for the top three teams:
    • Participates in all eight games during the season.
    • Shows improving scores during the season.
    • Wins 5 or more games during the season.
  • A banner for each team that meets the above criteria.
